Lions and Leos serve to improve human flourishing, and we see how the global hunger and nutrition crisis bears upon our local communities. We believe community improvement depends on the thriving of its members.
- 828 million people were affected by hunger in 2021. That is 9.8% of the world's population.
- 7 million people in the UK are struggling to afford to eat. This represents 1 in 10 of the UK's population.
- Globally in 2020, 149 million children under the age of five are stunted due to chronic malnutrition
- Almost 4 million UK children are at risk of malnutrition, as their families are too poor to afford healthy food
- 1/3 of the total food produced for the human consumption is wasted; 40% of all food loss occurs in post-harvest, agricultural supply chain, between producers and consumers.
- UK households waste an estimated 6.7 million tonnes of food each year, around 1/3 of the 21.7 million tonnes purchased. This means that approximately 32% of all food purchased per year is not eaten.
- Studies reported that anaemia affected about 40% of pregnant women and more than 20% of non-pregnant women in 2020
- The UK prevalence of anaemia is estimated to be 23% in pregnant women and 14% in non-pregnant women
