Lion Jim Windley
Lions Club of Maidenhead

With great sadness we report the death of Lion Jim. He was a loyal and enthusiastic member since 1975 and held the position of Club Treasurer on several occasions in the 1980’s. He was an active Lion until a few years ago when he had to move into a Nursing Home. Our thoughts are with his daughter and son and their respective families.

Lion Peter Barker
Lions Club of Portsmouth

Please note the sad news of Peter’s passing to higher service at home this morning.

Peter's son Steve and his Daughter Lion Sally Barker (Club President) are supporting his Mother, Janet.

Obviously at this time there is no other information however the Almoner will be advised in due course of funeral arrangements.

FURTHER NOTE
Lion Peter Barker’s funeral was held yesterday and there was a church full of his friends and family. Peter was aged 77 and had been in poor health for some months. He was also a member of the Pituitary Gland Association being a sufferer for over 20 years . This never stopped him caring for the community. One of his last acts, a few weeks before he died, was to thank the nurses in the hospital by presenting a basket of sweets and fruit as a 'thank you'! ............ ‘Others before himself’ was his way of living his life .

Peter's wife Janet wishes to thank all those lions who sent condolences.

FINAL TRIBUTE
Peter Barker joined Portsmouth Lions in 1994. Peter was passionate about Lions and Lions gave him the tools to help others. All those who knew him found him to be caring and compassionate and he found his true role on the welfare committee.

Peter was equally at home fundraising and procuring raffle prizes, he attended events with his winning smile and easy manner. As a family man Peter understood that the same glue which hold families together also holds the family of lions together, social occasions were so important to him and he enjoyed Charters and Conventions, especially ‘Red and White on the Isle of Wight’ in his presidential year.

One of his greatest achievements, together with Pat Nixon from Cosham Lions, was the formation of the Pride of St Edmunds Leo Club – how he enjoyed the company of young people and he was able to speak to them as if they were his own children. They, in turn looked upon him as a kindly uncle who took them to places such as Paultons Park. The coach trip to Paultons enabled him to help the young carers and other families who would not otherwise have been able to afford the entrance fee.

Peter had a natural warmth as anyone who knew him will uphold, he was equally at home talking to Lord Mayors (or even District Governors) as well as the hundreds of people from all walks of life, whom he persuaded to take home a Message in a Bottle container for their fridge, again another passion of his.

We, the members of Portsmouth Lions club have our own happy memories of Peter. Peter loved life and anyone who ever met him loved Peter. We will miss Peter, his loyalty, his enthusiasm, his smile. We will all miss a good friend, a lovely man.

And finally... Peter had a little book of Graces and this is one to remember:-

"May we not be like porridge cold and stodgy, but like Cornflakes, Crisp and Ready to Serve!"
